somehow, you've managed to end up at the help page for the mechanism that generates thumbnails and wrappers for all the photos in my gallery.

the script takes a single argument—a perl regular expression [perldoc.com]—that is used to select a slice of photos by date. if the regular expression provided matches multiple images, you get a palette of clickable thumbnails to choose from. one match displays that single photo at a nice "normal" size, and no matches gets you back here.

the date format is the-somewhat-hard-to-read yyyymmddhhmmss.

a few regular expression basics to get you started...

any digit matches itself, and a sequence of digits matches that sequence anywhere
brackets can be used to match any single character they contain, and support ranges; [27] matches the digit 2 or 7
\d matches any single digit (shorthand for [0-9])
parenthesis and the pipe ("or") can be used to match one string of digits or another, e.g. (27|42)
+ means "at least one of the preceding character", and * means any number including zero
{n} matches exactly n of the preceding character
^ matches the beginning of the date, and $ matches the end

http://www.unpunk.com/~greck/photos/?^\d{12}27: matches any photo taken at 27 seconds past the minute
http://www.unpunk.com/~greck/photos/?^\d{4}122[45]: photos taken on christmas or christmas eve of any year
http://www.unpunk.com/~greck/photos/?^\d{4}(\d\d)\1: any photos taken where the day was the same as the month (01/01, 02/02, etc.; uses a backreference)
